Sammany – Matalib
In December 2018, thousands of protestors took to the streets of Sudan calling for change and the end to former President Omar Al Bashir’s 30 year military dictatorship. With prices of basic commodities such as bread and fuel skyrocketing, thousands of citizens united against the regime on the streets of Sudan. Eventually, taking a stand in front of the Sudanese Armed Forces headquarters in a mass sit-in on April 6th 2019. This weakened President Omar Al Bashir, who was overthrown in a military coup on April 11th, 2019.
Inspired by the events of the Sudan uprising and shared in solidarity with the revolution, Sudanese artist and producer Sammany Hajo, currently based in Qatar, uploaded ‘Matalib’ – with the four lines of the hook from a poem by revolutionary poet Omer Mustafa Abu Minna, and a title that translates to “demands” – on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. Having touched many hearts across the world, Hajo launched the #matalibchallenge, an initiative encouraging Sudanese artists around the world to share their own versions of the powerful song. Today, Sammany Hajo brings ‘Matalib’ to COLORS – the newer version of the single addresses the ‘Mattar Blue’ movement which began after the death of 26-year-old Mohamed Hashim Mattar on June 3rd.

COLORSXSTUDIOS presents a new project exploring the role that music and visual art culture plays in relation to the campaign for global equality, human rights & democracy. Focusing on Sudan, the project showcases music from the north-east African nation and diaspora as a medium through which to raise awareness on the political situation there.
Across multiple episodes, a selection of Sudanese artists share their perspectives through performance of their music, alongside journalistic and editorial content to provide in-depth context to the complex issues and events addressed. The project channels the creative spirit of the protest campaign against the autocratic government of President Omar Al Bashir and the military regime that succeeded him, emphasising how music, poetry and art are central to the dynamic cultural energy at the heart of the movement.
In intimate performances and interviews, Sudanese musicians Sammany Hajo, Gaidaa & Flippter discuss their personal reflections and perspectives on the ongoing situation. In addition, journalist Yousra Elbagir provides further context, including an overview of the history of the conflict, analysis of the current state of affairs and reflections on the broader cultural significance moving forward. The full project is presented in the ‘Mattar Blue’ color of the viral social media campaign inspired by the death of 26-year-old Mohamed Hashim Mattar on June 3rd, that has been so influential in raising international awareness of the situation.
