Mayra Andrade is a Cape Verdean singer currently based in Lisbon, Portugal whose magical contemporary interpretations of traditional Cape Verdean morna music has seen her being compared to Cesária Évora, one of the greatest voices of the country. With several stunning records under her belt, the most recent being ‘Manga’ which dropped earlier this year, Andrade’s intoxicating compositions encapsulate her Cape Verdean roots whilst also nodding to more Western influences that find their way into her soundscapes.
This is present in ‘Tan Kalakatan’, a standout single from ‘Manga’ which Maya Andrade performs as part of her COLORS session. Singing in her native Cape Verdean crioulo language, Andrade’s enchanting tones are carried by a subtle, electronic-led beat which features more rhythmic drums.
