Opening with the line “I feel like a god right now” couldn’t be more apt for ‘I Know’, the latest single from Sri Lankan-Canadian artist and producer Yanchan. Fusing a fiery hip-hop beat with Carnatic nuances, ‘I Know’ is a collaboration with fellow native Shan Vincent de Paul who blitz through his powerful and hard-hitting verse with ease. Together, the pair have created a song that empowers and celebrates both the Eastern and Western influences, masterfully blending the sounds to create a seamless, powerful statement.
Toronto based artist Eva Tolkin aka EVA shares ‘CRY’, a glorious standalone single that serves as the follow up to her Danny L Harle produced single ‘Touch Me’ and is the pop anthem you didn’t know you needed. Although the track doesn’t appear on her forthcoming EP, it’s irresistibly vibrant atmospherics and fun pop sensibilities are unquestionable infectious with EVA’s bright vocals wonderfully complimenting the club-ready instrumentation. It’s going to make you want to dance, cry, or perhaps even both!
Loud, the MC from Montreal reveals a very convincing and faithful piece in the form of ‘Médalilles’ where his melancholic intonations are accompanied by sharp punchlines. Now that the excitement of the beginnings has passed, the young man seems quite overwhelmed, almost already exhausted by the world and events that now surround him. Loud returns this year with a brand new album that allows him to further serve as the ambassador of French-speaking Canadian rap status. The successor to the unmissable ‘Une année record’ is named ‘Tout ça pour ça’ and will be released on May 24th.
Ottawa based duo Garçons, comprised of singer-songwriter Deelo Avery and producer Julian Strangelove, dazzle with their Afrobeat and R&B infused new single ‘Pedigree’. Bursting with joyful and groovy guitar lines, the track is an absolute blast from start to finish. A breath of fresh air, ‘Pedigree’ is a contemporary concoction that entices and charms its way into your heart and sets you free.
Since introducing himself with his stunning debut EP ‘Heaven’s Only Wishful’ last year, Toronto based singer/songwriter MorMor has shared ‘Outside’, his first release of 2019. Taking a leaf from the EP’s soft and delicate atmospherics, the new single sees his soothing tones sweep across the slightly more upbeat soundscape. The follow up to last December’s ‘Pass The Hours’, ‘Outside’ is another poetic affair that touches on MorMor’s feelings of isolation and alienation.
Toronto based five-piece Jaunt share their shimmering new single ‘On Your Mind’, their first taste of new music since last year’s ‘Cue’ EP. An absolutely blissful and dreamy affair, the track’s sparkling instrumentation serves as the perfect complement for those soft vocals to traipse across with ease – offering a comforting hug. With ‘On Your Mind’, Jaunt have created one of those songs where you can’t help but lose yourself to the sound – forgetting everything and just letting yourself be taken away by the music.
Montreal based artist Shay Lia is one of the most exciting R&B voices to come out of Canada. Her slew of enticing singles wonderfully accentuate the rising singer’s mesmerising and velveteen voice whilst production from the likes of Kaytranada and Sango offer a slick finesse. From the funk-filled bounce of “Funky Thang” to the spirited atmospherics of “The Cycle”, the singer showcases her incredible versatility as a singer/songwriter. Shay Lia’s latest offering ‘Feels’, produced by Stwo, is another gorgeous soul searching number which serves as her most intimate and personal release to date.
Sri Lankan-born, Toronto-based rapper Shan Vincent de Paul teams up with fellow native Navz-47 on his smooth and mellow new single ‘Heaven’. Having released two spectacular albums in the form of ‘Saviors’ and ‘Trigger Happy Heartbreak’ in 2016 and 2017 respectively, the sideways member’s music touches on a range of topics from politics and family to identity and love through his powerful lyricism and thought provoking music videos. With the LA+CH produced ‘Heaven’, Navz-47 takes centre stage as she sings/raps in Tamil over the lush soundscape whilst Shan Vincent de Paul offers up his own smooth vocals for the chorus.
Claire Mortifee’s debut album “Medicines” possesses several gems and her collaborative track “No Rollies” with David Morin is one of the smoothest. The combination of Mortifee’s songwriting and Morin’s sweet vocals make for a timeless cut, with all the softness of old school R&B melodies, as harmony stacks and the suspense of a standout bridge bump against a warm fat bassline and shamelessly sassy snare hits. Active in her hometown community of Toronto, Mortifee pops up often in California for her uniquely dynamic live shows, displaying her depth of lyrical delivery and showcasing the physicality of her music as she snakes across the stage in metallic spandex with an endless smile and powerfully natural magnetism.
