Queens-raised, L.A.-based Chilean-American artist Aalok Bala shares one of the most striking and original projects of the year with ‘Sacred Mirror’. Having already impressed with her magical and enchanting sounds on previous singles ‘Sueño’, ‘Moon Juice’ and ‘The Hive’ this year, the EP is completed with new cuts ‘Body of Light’, ‘Crystal’ and ‘Alone With The Night’. Copenhagen-based, Norwegian electronic duo Smerz share ‘I don’t talk about that much / Hva hvis’, taken from their forthcoming ‘Believer’ project. The singles follow Catharina Stoltenberg and Henriette Motzfeldt’s 2018 EP ‘Have fun’ as well as recent cuts ‘The favourite / Rap interlude’ and capture the pair’s exhilarating and cinematic sound. Blistering electronics and synths skitter across the sweeping soundscape as the pair’s heavenly tones are laid down with a delicate touch to create the perfectly juxtaposing sound on ‘I don’t talk about that much’ whilst the latter single embodies a minimal instrumentation of gorgeous strings. Melbourne based artist Tim Shiel continues his ‘Distraction Season’ series with ‘Get Into Your Love’, a collaboration with vocalist and harpist Lucy Roleff. Driven by a relentless electronic dub beat that brings to the mind the raving sounds of Jamie xx, the single is taken to heavenly heights with Roleff’s enchanting vocals soaring above as she sings “get out of the water and get into your love”. Las Vegas-based artist and synthesist Isola (aka Ivana Carrescia) unveils her spectacular debut EP ‘EP1’ which is out via L.A. based label GODMODE. From the opener ‘Ischia’ to closing number ‘Ricorda (Tell Me)’, the seven-track project is bursting with electronic-led beats interspersed with magical, haunting vocals that are epitomised by Isola’s signature synths. Created alongside GODMODE founder Nick Sylvester, ‘EP1’ is a stellar introduction to Isola’s work and cements her as one to watch in the years to come.
Paris-based producer and singer/songwriter Oklou unveils her incredible, long-awaited debut full length project ‘GALORE’. Split into three parts, the eleven-track project features ‘Fall’, the spellbinding single which Oklou performed as part of her COLORS show earlier this year. Joining the pack are glorious electronic-led cuts like ‘Unearth Me’, ‘God’s Chariot’, ‘Rosebud’, ‘Another Night’ and more. Australian duo Brutalist (comprising Melbourne-based producer Lucianblomkamp and John Hassell) have teamed up with LYAM on new single ‘Balsalke’. Lifted from the pair’s latest EP titled ‘Michael J Fox’ which follows up their fantastic debut mixtape from 2016, the single encompasses a hard-hitting electronic beat which carries LYAM’s gritty and raw delivery. Peruvian label Kebrada unveil their glittering and hypnotic debut compilation titled ‘Discos en 3/Cuartos’ curated by DENGUE DENGUE DENGUE. Featuring a dazzling array of electronic and club cuts by the likes of Siete Catorce, Funeral, DJ Python, Nick León, Lila Tirando A Violeta and more, the ten-track project is one of the most cutting edge and impressive bodies of work you’ll hear this year. Uruguayan born producer Lila Tirando A Violeta shares hypnotic and captivating new album ‘Limerencia’ via Mexican label NAAFI. Serving as the follow up to last year’s ‘Sentient’ project, ‘Limerencia’ was “composed during a physical recovery process” where the majority of the songs were conceived “under a still ongoing neurological medical treatment”. With this is mind, it comes as no surprise the songs embody an intimate atmosphere that brings forth a sense of meditation and relaxation. Beijing based producer Howie Lee shares exhilarating new single ‘蜿蜒风 The Wriggled Wind’ which is taken from his forthcoming ‘7 Weapons Series’. Featuring Lee’s signature blend of traditional Asian sounds with contemporary club elements, ‘蜿蜒风 The Wriggled Wind’ is a track that will keep you on your toes from start to finish. South African-born, New York-based artist Dasychira (pronounced /ˈdah.see.kira/) unveils transcendent new visual for ‘Swirl’. The spellbinding and otherworldly music video directed and edited by Guille Santos wonderfully captures the song’s magical and awe-inspiring atmospherics which combine celestial electronics with heavenly violins courtesy of Vivek Menon. London based producer MODEL 86 returns with ‘So We’re Here Then’, a crisp, electronic-led single that serves as a taste of his forthcoming debut album. A striking combination of sounds, the single brings to mind the glittering atmospherics of SOPHIE, the powerful orchestration of Hudson Mohawke and the intricacies of Jamie xx’s concoctions and blends them together to create a sound that further pushes the boundaries of experimental pop. London based producer Haich Ber Na follows up last year’s exceptional project ‘Everywhere’s Home’ with striking new single ‘By Floras’. Laced by intricate electronics that skip and squeeze their way through the soundscape to create an ordered chaos, Haich Ber Na’s delicate, falsetto-laden tones offer a warmth to juxtapose the cool instrumentation as he sings about the growing distance between a friend. Glasgow based production duo VARDI and Rory Comerford team up as Zazim Soundsystem to share their incredible new EP ‘AYÉ’, which means “Life” in Yoruba and “Yes” in Scots. Opening with the lush soundscapes of ‘AYEE’, the three-track project expertly combines UK bass, Latin and West African percussion along with traditional Celtic music to create a sound unlike anything else. RAAJA BEATS is the musical project of Bangalore, India based producers Raka Ashok and Malfnktion who share their explosive new self-titled EP. Featuring previously released singles ‘POONGATRU’, ‘NINNUKORI’ and ‘RAJA RAJATHI’, the nine-track project encapsulates edits of iconic songs from Tamil film composer and songwriter, Ilaiyaraaja. A wonderful blurring of Eastern and Western sounds, ‘RAAJA BEATS’ is one of the strongest instrumental EP’s you’ll hear all year.
Norwegian artist Sassy 009 aka Sunniva Lindgaard delivers an explosive electronic-led single in the form of ‘Ghost Town’. Recorded in collaboration with Spotify’s Oyster Playlist, the single serves as the striking follow up to last year’s exceptional ‘Thrasher’. On ‘Ghost Town’, Sassy 009 works her magic over a potent bassline that boasts equally frenetic breakbeats that’ll get your heart racing from start to finish. London-based singer, songwriter and producer Shygirl shares collaboration with Arca in the form of new single ‘unconditional’; the proceeds of which will be donated to Black Lives Matter and Inquest UK. Released as a Bandcamp exclusive, the single encompasses a sparse electronic instrumentation penned by Arca whilst Shygirl’s hypnotic and emotive vocals convey a pain that is currently permeating throughout the globe.
