Chinese/Australian avant-garde composer Mindy Meng Wang 王萌 and Melbourne-based artist Tim Shiel team up for mesmerising new EP ‘Nervous Energy 一触即发’. Over the course of the project’s four expansive tracks, the two artists present wonderfully striking and seamlessly fluid blends of sounds that invite and invigorate from start to finish. From opener ‘Sleeping Tiger On The Bund 蓄势待发’ to closing cut ‘My Love Is Not What It Was 嗔念’, the EP is a blissfully vibrant and soothing experience from start to finish. Melbourne based artist Tim Shiel continues his ‘Distraction Season’ series with ‘Get Into Your Love’, a collaboration with vocalist and harpist Lucy Roleff. Australian duo Brutalist (comprising Melbourne-based producer Lucianblomkamp and John Hassell) have teamed up with LYAM on new single ‘Balsalke’. Lifted from the pair’s latest EP titled ‘Michael J Fox’ which follows up their fantastic debut mixtape from 2016, the single encompasses a hard-hitting electronic beat which carries LYAM’s gritty and raw delivery. Melbounre, Australia based producer Tennis Pagan follows up his debut EP ‘EKO’ with fantastic new single ‘ GALAXIES A MESS’. Melbourne based duo Kllo (Chloe Kaul and Simon Lam) return with the electric new single ‘Still Here’ taken from their forthcoming album ‘Maybe We Could’. Driven by a set of 90’s inspired rave-drums, the track is given a gentle touch with some delicate piano chords and Kaul’s consoling vocals yearn for understanding as she sings about an emotionally suffocating relationship. Melbourne based producer Tim Shiel returns with his first non-soundtrack song in five years with ‘Right in Front of You’, a collaboration with Braille Face. A whirling of woozy sounds that intertwine and coalesce to create an entirely immersive atmosphere, ‘Right in Front of You’ is narrated by Spirit Level label-mate Braille Face’s endearing tones while Sydney producer Anatole lends his fabulous trumpet.

Following up her stellar debut single ‘To Un-Know’ earlier this year, the EP features four brilliant re-imaginations of songs that “fascinated” the artist. From the clattery and glitchy atmospherics of opener ‘Skills’ by Gang Starr to the energetic and utterly intoxicating instrumentation on ‘Ongoing Thing’, a remix of 20ysl’s collaboration with Oddisee, ‘Fixations’ is undoubtedly one of the best projects you’ll hear this year.
Australian beatsmith Flume teams up with singer-rapper Reo Cragun to release ‘Quits’, a staggering and powerful three-track EP. Featuring a new edit of previously released single ‘Friends’, the project opens with title-track ‘Quits’ which boasts Flume’s signature instrumentation giving Cragun the platform to lay down his own slick verses. In the middle, is ‘Levitate’, another tantalisingly smooth and powerful track that opens with the chirping of birds before introducing a pounding bass and synth heavy beat.
Aiya are a Melbourne based duo comprised of Ayten + Felicity who create mesmerising electronic-led cuts that draw you in and enchant from start to finish. Since debuting with the glitchy and crisp atmospherics of ‘If I Could Get’ over four years ago, the pair have released just a handful of other tracks in the form of ‘Go’ and ‘Girl’. Marking Aiya’s return, is ‘Focus’, a moody and utterly captivating number which commands your undivided attention as the sparse electronics teeter in and out of the haunting vocals.
Jack Grace’s unique compositions have been making waves on the Australian underground scene for a couple of years now, and the electronic singer/producer has consolidated on this momentum with the release of his latest EP ‘IF I TREMBLE’. Fusing classic piano soul with elements of UK bass and footwork production, the distinctive sound of brooding, melancholy tracks like ‘us’ and ‘waiting’ showcases Grace’s ability to create forward-thinking, multi-layered music with a chilling emotional touch.
