Poet, singer, songwriter and even rapper are all art forms that are embodied by Melbourne based, Zambian born artist Sampa The Great. Her unequivocally inspiring and insightful words paint pictures of narratives that blossom and grow, drawing you into the next stage with each utterance. Having already impressed with her truly magical debut The Great Mixtape back in 2015, Sampa The Great continued her ascent as one of the most exciting lyricists around with the release of Birds And The Bee9 earlier this year. With contributions from the likes of REMI, Nicole Gumbe, Syreneyiscreamy, Mwanje Tembo and Zaachariah, the thirteen-track project is another transcendent record which delves further deeper into Sampa’s world.
For her COLORS show, Sampa The Great takes us on a journey to the East with a spellbinding and spiritual performance of standout single “Rhymes to the East”. A marriage between a spacious hip-hop beat flecked with Eastern sounds, Sampa lays down the truth with a hypnotising flow that sinks and rises throughout the muddy instrumentation. One of those bewitching tracks where you find a new meaning with each listen, “Rhymes To The East” is an absolute gem. Dive into the stunning session up top and make sure you give Birds And The Bee9 a spin too!
