Riding on the heels of being named one of the most exciting acts to sprout from the Dutch hip hop scene in some time, Amsterdam native Ray Fuego is an artist with an outright rebellious nature, an punk infused approach to hip hop, and a multi-hyphenate creative collective called SMIB. With an impressive body of work under his belt, from projects like Siroop ‘N Lottosackas, and Zwart, Fuego’s music is capped by his blend of english and dutch lyricism, while his choice in abrasive beats make for an ominous energy to an otherwise unruly presence sonically. Last month, the Bijlmer bred artist released his latest album FUE, a 13-track offering that expands on Fuego’s slight deviation from his punk inspired work, presenting a more trap-leaning space to sink in to.
For his edition of a COLORS Show, Ray Fuego delivers a fire performance of “TOKE AND SMOKE” produced by Garrincha. Though not necessarily an initial standout track from his recent FUE release, “TOKE AND SMOKE” occupies a space where Ray Fuego’s weaving of english and dutch lyrics and vibe driven atmosphere allow him to ride a wave that bears some semblance to the tone of the album in full. However, the tracks coolness also offers a contrasting vibe where Fuego’s cadence provokes familiar excitement found in call & response songs and a braggadocio that can be worn for days after listening to it.
