Created “entirely in a floating hotel on the edge of Tofino, BC”, ‘Traces’, the stunning new EP from Canadian artist and producer Kogane is absolute bliss. The four-track project opens with the intricate melodies and utterly captivating soundscapes of ‘Bicycles’ and ‘Alberta’, both instrumental tracks that set the scene wonderfully for the EP’s stunning atmospherics. The EP closes with ‘Max’ and title-track ‘Traces’, both of which introduces Kogane’s soothing tones into the foray, adding another layer of warmth and comfort.
Somalia born, Toronto based singer/songwriter Amaal’s voice is quite frankly heavenly. Sharing her songs on social media catapulted her reach before landing her a deal with Universal Music Canada through whom she released her stunning official debut single ‘Not What I Thought’ earlier this year. On latest single ‘Later’, which is taken from her newly released ‘Black Dove’ EP, Amaal enchants with her super smooth vocals and poetic lyricism.
The gorgeous ballad is also accompanied by an equally stunning and insightful visual directed by Kat Webber. Dedicated to F.E.A.T, “a bus program that brings families across the province to visit loved ones in the criminal justice system”, the video depicts Amaal’s own experiences with the program, highlighting a wonderful initiative.
Toronto based R&B duo dvsn (comprised of producer Nineteen85 and singer Daniel Daley) mark their long awaited return with two new singles, ‘Miss Me?‘ and ‘In Between’. Serving as their first new music since their 2017 sophomore album ‘Morning After’, the songs are just as slick and smooth as any dvsn tracks out there. The latter, is the one we’re highlighting here – its simple, guitar-laden production allows Daley’s exceptional vocals to melt your heart as he serenades you with those golden tones.
Since introducing himself with his stunning debut EP ‘Heaven’s Only Wishful’ last year, Toronto based singer/songwriter MorMor has shared ‘Outside’, his first release of 2019. Taking a leaf from the EP’s soft and delicate atmospherics, the new single sees his soothing tones sweep across the slightly more upbeat soundscape. The follow up to last December’s ‘Pass The Hours’, ‘Outside’ is another poetic affair that touches on MorMor’s feelings of isolation and alienation.
Toronto based five-piece Jaunt share their shimmering new single ‘On Your Mind’, their first taste of new music since last year’s ‘Cue’ EP. An absolutely blissful and dreamy affair, the track’s sparkling instrumentation serves as the perfect complement for those soft vocals to traipse across with ease – offering a comforting hug. With ‘On Your Mind’, Jaunt have created one of those songs where you can’t help but lose yourself to the sound – forgetting everything and just letting yourself be taken away by the music.
Montreal based artist Shay Lia is one of the most exciting R&B voices to come out of Canada. Her slew of enticing singles wonderfully accentuate the rising singer’s mesmerising and velveteen voice whilst production from the likes of Kaytranada and Sango offer a slick finesse. From the funk-filled bounce of “Funky Thang” to the spirited atmospherics of “The Cycle”, the singer showcases her incredible versatility as a singer/songwriter. Shay Lia’s latest offering ‘Feels’, produced by Stwo, is another gorgeous soul searching number which serves as her most intimate and personal release to date.
Claire Mortifee’s debut album “Medicines” possesses several gems and her collaborative track “No Rollies” with David Morin is one of the smoothest. The combination of Mortifee’s songwriting and Morin’s sweet vocals make for a timeless cut, with all the softness of old school R&B melodies, as harmony stacks and the suspense of a standout bridge bump against a warm fat bassline and shamelessly sassy snare hits. Active in her hometown community of Toronto, Mortifee pops up often in California for her uniquely dynamic live shows, displaying her depth of lyrical delivery and showcasing the physicality of her music as she snakes across the stage in metallic spandex with an endless smile and powerfully natural magnetism.
