London-based multi-hyphenate artist KESH unveils sprawling other-worldly single ‘Jadine’s Escape’. Having dropped her debut offering ‘not gaan out’ last year, the visual artist, musician and designer continues to impress with her eclectic and experimental production and delicate voice. A melding of sounds akin to that of Grimes and FKA twigs, ‘Jadine’s Escape’ is laced with intricate beats and haunting vocals that’ll transport you from reality for just over six minutes.
Copenhagen-based trio CHINAH kick off their 2021 with the release of spellbinding new single ‘Mysterious’. Serving as the follow up to last year’s ‘Promise’ and ‘Eternal Blue’, the single sees vocalist Fine Glinvad’s dazzling tones glide atop the experimental, electronic-led production with ease. A satirical commentary on “of women being attracted to the mysterious man, and how it leaves you guessing about his feelings”, ‘Mysterious’ has us intrigued for what’s to come from the Danish outfit.
Norwegian artist, producer and creative Lokoy teams up with Nils Bech on striking new single ‘relay’ which is lifted from his forthcoming debut album titled ‘badminton’. Driven by a lively beat which blends together African-inspired percussion as well as sampled Icelandic church choirs, ‘relay’ is a vivid pop cut that’s finessed by those light and airy vocals. Rising Dutch producer Sim Fane shares vibrant, double-single ‘closure’ which includes a collaboration with Rotterdam-based artist Elijah Waters who treated us to a stunning A COLORS SHOW earlier this year. On ‘—˚✦ ඔබ + මම ♬ !!! ❀˚’, Waters’ endearing tones sweep across the serene, dreamy soundscape whilst the titular, instrumental number sees Fane’s sonic wizardry take shape courtesy of spirited electronic spells. London based KG and New Jersey based UNiiQU3 team up on fiery double-single ‘B2B / Black Roses’ released via Jamz Supernova’s Future Bounce label. Opening with ‘B2B’, a rhythmic culmination of sizzling club beats that straddle the sultry stratosphere with UNiiQU3’s infectious vocals, the release is topped off with the spacial atmospherics of ‘Black Roses’, another blistering cut from the two producers. Egyptian sound artist Rozzma makes his XL Recordings debut with the release of his explosive and innovative EP ‘Khatar Sayeb’. Featuring previous cut ‘Hout’ which boasts Rozzma’s spitfire verses riding over a frenetic beat as well as recently released ‘Gheirek’ which encompasses a softer, lovelorn aesthetic, ‘Khatar Sayeb’ is rounded out by new gems ‘Hela’ and the closer ‘Sayeb’. French outfit QuinzeQuinze (aka Ennio, Julia, Marvin, Robin and Tsi Min) unveil their striking and utterly intoxicating new EP titled ‘Le Jeune’. Self-described as ‘𝐂LᎥ𝓜𝒶𝐓𝔦ᑕ Ｍ𝓾s𝐢ᑕ’, the quintet’s surreal and inventive sound is ever present from opener ‘Pa’iPa’i’ to closer ‘Bolero’, boasting refreshingly vibrant soundscapes that straddle the line between organic and otherworldly. Pahua is the solo musical project of Mexican singer, songwriter, producer and DJ Paulina Sotomayor who also serves as one-half of Sotomayor. French-Algerian artist Sabrina Bellaouel shares electrifying new single ‘The Build Up’ which is taken from her forthcoming project ‘Libra’. A masterful blend of soulful alt-R&B with electronic flourishes, ‘The Build Up’ is interspersed with snippets of speech from astrologer Fernando Prudhomme that complement Bellaouel’s exploration of the zodiac sign. Queens-raised, L.A.-based Chilean-American artist Aalok Bala shares one of the most striking and original projects of the year with ‘Sacred Mirror’. Having already impressed with her magical and enchanting sounds on previous singles ‘Sueño’, ‘Moon Juice’ and ‘The Hive’ this year, the EP is completed with new cuts ‘Body of Light’, ‘Crystal’ and ‘Alone With The Night’. Copenhagen-based, Norwegian electronic duo Smerz share ‘I don’t talk about that much / Hva hvis’, taken from their forthcoming ‘Believer’ project. The singles follow Catharina Stoltenberg and Henriette Motzfeldt’s 2018 EP ‘Have fun’ as well as recent cuts ‘The favourite / Rap interlude’ and capture the pair’s exhilarating and cinematic sound. Blistering electronics and synths skitter across the sweeping soundscape as the pair’s heavenly tones are laid down with a delicate touch to create the perfectly juxtaposing sound on ‘I don’t talk about that much’ whilst the latter single embodies a minimal instrumentation of gorgeous strings. Melbourne based artist Tim Shiel continues his ‘Distraction Season’ series with ‘Get Into Your Love’, a collaboration with vocalist and harpist Lucy Roleff. Driven by a relentless electronic dub beat that brings to the mind the raving sounds of Jamie xx, the single is taken to heavenly heights with Roleff’s enchanting vocals soaring above as she sings “get out of the water and get into your love”. Las Vegas-based artist and synthesist Isola (aka Ivana Carrescia) unveils her spectacular debut EP ‘EP1’ which is out via L.A. based label GODMODE. From the opener ‘Ischia’ to closing number ‘Ricorda (Tell Me)’, the seven-track project is bursting with electronic-led beats interspersed with magical, haunting vocals that are epitomised by Isola’s signature synths. Created alongside GODMODE founder Nick Sylvester, ‘EP1’ is a stellar introduction to Isola’s work and cements her as one to watch in the years to come.
Paris-based producer and singer/songwriter Oklou unveils her incredible, long-awaited debut full length project ‘GALORE’. Split into three parts, the eleven-track project features ‘Fall’, the spellbinding single which Oklou performed as part of her COLORS show earlier this year. Australian duo Brutalist (comprising Melbourne-based producer Lucianblomkamp and John Hassell) have teamed up with LYAM on new single ‘Balsalke’.
